Why buy in Viareggio
The city of Carnival and Liberty (Art Nouveau) architecture: the Passeggiata along the sea, the Darsena with its superyachts, the pine woods and Puccini’s lake. A real city, alive all year round.
- 60,680 residents: the largest town in Versilia
- 7.4 km of bathing coastline
- 5 out of 6 bathing areas rated “Excellent”, the other “Good”
Viareggio is the Versilia that never closes: a city by the sea with a carnival famous around the world and the shipyards of the great yachting industry.
The Viareggio Carnival began in 1873 with the first parades of floats; since 2001 the floats have been built in the Cittadella del Carnevale, with its workshops and museums.
After the fire of 1917 the city rethought its seafront: the 1923 town plan involved Giacomo Puccini and Galileo Chini, and the Liberty-style Passeggiata was born, more than two kilometres of pedestrian promenade with buildings such as the Gran Caffè Margherita and the Bagno Balena.
Behind the city lie Lake Massaciuccoli and Torre del Lago, where the Festival Puccini has been held since 1930; in the Darsena (the harbour basin) are the shipyards of a district that the Region of Tuscany describes as a world leader in yachts between 30 and 100 metres.
